Review: free as injuns (Native Earth)

Native Earth presents Tara Beagan’s free as injuns at Toronto’s Buddies in Bad Times Theatre

On a criss-crossed stage with red painted wood and gates to resemble a farm, over a thick layer of dark soil and surrounded at all four sides by the audience, a dark family drama is presented.

Based on O’Neill’s Desire Under the Elms, which in turn is the American retelling of ancient Greek tragedy, free as injuns arrives with the intention to symbolize and speak of the current state of Canada’s relationship with its Aboriginal and multicultural society using its characters: the white autocrat father, the three sons, a new wife and a newborn baby.

Review: Entity (Harbourfront World Stage and Wayne McGregor | Random Dance)

Harbourfront World Stage’s Entity is a wonderful dance piece examining kinesthetic intelligence

New to the world of dance, I didn’t know what to expect going into Wayne McGregor’s Entity. Running 60 minutes long, with no intermission, Entity was a completely enjoyable production that featured many talented dancers and beautiful choreography.

Review: Dark Matters (Canadian Stage)

Canadian Stage presents Canadian dance sensation Crystal Pite’s Dark Matters at Toronto’s St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.

Even though I’m not any sort of expert or aficionado when it comes to modern dance, I’ve been looking forward to seeing Dark Matters by Kidd Pivot Frankfurt RM ever since Canadian Stage announced it as a mid-season replacement for another show. Review: War Horse (Mirvish)

War Horse is a visual feast and is on stage at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto

I was blown away by beauty of the staging and effects while watching War Horse at Mirvish’s Princess of Wales Theatre.

When it comes to visual elements and design, this is one of the most spectacular shows I’ve seen. My show partner for the piece, Mooney on Theatre’s Managing Editor Wayne Leung, remarked that “Since they weren’t going for a hyper-realistic effect it opened them up to the exploration of amazing stagecraft.” I totally agree.
