The Devil Inside–a Tapestry Opera , Scottish Opera, and Music Theatre Wales co-production–is a new opera that explores weighty themes. James and Richard seek shelter in a mansion while lost in the mountains. The mysterious old man who lives there persuades them to buy a bottle containing a magical imp that can grant any wish. There’s only one catch: the bottle was forged in hell, and it is cursed.  Anyone who dies while still the owner of the bottle is damned to eternal hell.

Just. Soulpepper Soulpepper brings pointedly “relevant” play to the Toronto stage

Set in the Russian Revolution of 1905 and based on a true story, The Just (currently onstage at Soulpepper) tracks the actions of a group of Socialist-Revolutionaries as they undertake the assassination of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich. It questions idealism and political dogma while also humanizing the people who commit acts of terrorism. Review: Pyaasa (Theatre Passe Muraille)

Anusree Roy, the written and performer of PyaasaPyaasa is a “stunningly real theatrical experience” on the Toronto stage

Pyaasa, playing now at Theatre Passe Muraille, opens on a shadow-covered stage, which contains only a rusted metal bucket. For the next 50 minutes, the only other entity, prop or otherwise, to grace the stage is Anusree Roy, the playwright and sole actor. As exemplified by these first moments, Pyaasa goes on to tell a complex story with striking simplicity, creating rich characters and a world that is supremely real.
