Wrecking Ball’s topical show sheds light on police brutality on the Toronto stage
Wrecking Ball is a series that presents political theatre about a immediate topic in current events. This means that the pieces presented on any given night are written and rehearsed hastily and with no budget. This has obvious drawbacks in terms of quality, but it also gives artists freer reign to do cutting-edge work and say things that might be otherwise censored for fear of offending funders. At its best, Wrecking Ball gives us short plays that speak vibrant truth and asks relevant questions. Unfortunately, #deadcoonTO was not its best. Propeller Arts Project presents theatre “that demands to be seen” at the Ada Slait Hall in Toronto
In trying to describe a natural force outside the bounds of human comprehension, one poet managed to inspire generations. Niágara: a Pan-American Story by Propeller Arts Projects with PANAMANIA, playing at the Ada Slaight Hall is a love-story, a history lesson, and a meditation on nature and poetry that is gorgeous, moving, and memorable.
The Short Short Play Festival takes place on the second floor of The Social Capital Theatre. When I went, the room was packed with people sipping beer and chatting as much as possible before the lights dimmed. The theatre was prepped for a fun night with a fully-stocked bar dishing out drinks, a popcorn machine, short shorts dangling from the ceiling, and programs with crossword puzzles on the back. I believe six across is “Wedge.” With drinks, snacks, and brain teasers, I was already set for a good time. Three short short plays were the extra bit of something to make my night memorable.
