I Hired A Contract Killer – Toronto Fringe 2013 Press Release

“A Finnish Fringe First”

From press release:

In keeping with the Toronto Fringe tradition of presenting emerging artists and supporting new works, the Randolph Academy will present the North American premiere of I Hired a Contract Killer by Aki Kaurismäki at the 2013 Toronto Fringe Festival. This is the first-ever stage adaptation of the Finnish auteur’s cult favorite film of the same name that featured a soundtrack by The Clash’s Joe Strummer.

Hailed as “delightfully preposterous” by The Guardian, I Hired a Contract Killer will be directed by Bruce Pitkin, who says, “Aki Kaurismäki’s film I Hired a Contract Killer was made in 1990, but speaks to us today about the nihilistic state of the working class, where marginalization precludes all hope, and yet, even in fallow soil, a seed of hope can take root.”

He continues, “Kaurismäki finds absurdity in the most painful of human experiences: being fired, suicide, loneliness, depression and death. Adapting it for the stage presents enormous challenges, in maintaining the stylistic balance between his humour in the story and the suspense propelling it forward, especially since he writes in a very low-key style.”

No stranger to directing Toronto Fringe shows, director Bruce Pitkin has helmed Makbeth, Kassandra and 2012 Critics Pick The House of Bernarda Alba. Bruce has performed, directed and taught in Japan, Germany, the U.S. and Canada. Other directing credits include Albertine in Five Times, Road, Elecktra, Mephisto, Twelfth Night, The Merchant of Venice, Uncle Vanya, The Trojan Women, Top Girls, and Our Town.

In I Hired A Contract Killer, civil servant Henri Boulanger is distraught at being ousted from his job and hires a professional to murder him. When his luck in love and life starts to change, Henri tries to cancel the contract, but is unable to do so. Faced with his imminent demise, Henri tries to drop clues to the contract killer that he would very much like to live. Will he be able to convince the hired gun to stop his pursuit?

The troupe of emerging artists who form the cast are all in their final year of training at the Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts’ Triple Threat® College Program.

Review: The Way of All Fish/Miss Fozzard Finds Her Feet (Kourage Theatre, Cric Crac Collective & Crazy Folk Productions)

Elva Mai Hoover and Tracy RankinA quirky, charming evening at Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre with a fishy double-bill

From a push up challenge between a self-absorbed executive and her devoted secretary to an aging store clerk playing footie with a doctor, the double bill featuring The Way of All Fish and Miss Fozzard Finds Her Feet, did not disappoint. Watching the comedic intriguing actors embody their respective characters was truly a wonderful way to spend a summer evening at the intimate Tarragon Theatre Extra Space.

I’ll be honest. Having read only a short synopsis on the double bill production, I went in with minimal expectation. I let my imagination go wild while I guessed what the intent was behind each play based on their chosen titles. Does the way of the fish have something to do with the analogy ‘there is plenty of fish in the sea?’ Or how exactly is Miss Fozzard going to find her feet? With that being said, going in to the theater with minimal expectation made the experience of watching the plays all the more enjoyable and intriguing.

DABDA – Toronto Fringe 2013 Press Release

From press release:

alvinhayle_group2

Do you remember what it felt like to be a teenager, struggling to define yourself in the face of a world you can’t control? How much would you sacrifice to feel free? Alvinhayle presents DABDA, an original coming-of-age story of seven affluent teenagers in the 1940’s and their journey to find themselves through acts of rebellion, self-liberation and freedom of expression. Combining contemporary dance, fashion and indie music, DABDA is a heartfelt story you do not want to miss. Created by Alvin Collantes & Hayley Paone in collaboration with the ensemble, DABDA plays at Factory Theatre Mainspace as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival July 5-14, 2013. Tickets are available beginning June 17 via www.fringetoronto.com, by telephone at 416-966-1062 (ext.1), or at the door.

DABDA invites you to join these young people on an evening they will never forget. The seven friends escape a posh family Fourth of July ball – and a promise to keep an eye on a little sister – to attend an impromptu underground beach soiree, strictly for teenagers only. The night that follows is filled with innocence and temptation, inhibitions, independence, and love. Ira and her friends push their limits in hopes of discovering freedom. But the plot thickens as they begin to understand the consequences of their actions the morning after Independence Day, and find out there is more to learn about growing up than just being free…

DABDA is a multi-disciplinary, multimedia storytelling experience in dance form.  DABDA’s dramaturgical composition fearlessly employs the language of human gesture and physical expression within contemporary dance movement to tell a wholly-articulated story. The human relationship, conflicts, and emotions of the story are fully realized by this young company using only the dancers’ bodies as medium to interact and communicate with each other, and the audience.

The DABDA ensemble features performances by vibrant up-and-coming talents Sydney McManusKelly ShawTaveeta SzymanowiczTamerra HerresAmanda DonatoAndrea GaliziaThomas Colford,Christopher DuarteAndrew DragertDarian Mark, and Zac Rivest.

Project DABDA is a creative partnership between Alvin Collantes (Top 40 Finalist for seasons 3 & 4 of CTV’sSo You Think You Can Dance Canada) and Hayley Paone (Artistic Director of iNhayle Dance Company). Exploring new avenues in choreography and composition, Paone and Collantes have performed various collaborations since 2009, including Toronto’s Original Choreographer’s Ball. In 2013, they founded Project DABDA, a creative collaboration lab offering dance artists the opportunity to work with local artists of other mediums.
