There’s a lot to love about improv musical One Night Only: The Greatest Musical Never Written
You’re given a setting, a few anecdotal tidbits of information and a general direction for the plot. Create an entire storyline on the spot with an entire theatre of eager spectators hanging on your every word. Now imagine doing this while also having to sing in time and on key accompanied by a full music section. No pressure, right?
Toronto’s Lower Ossington Theatre’s production of the musical The Last Five Years is engaging
Fact: I’ve seen The Last Five Years about 42 times in various theatres around North America including the movie version starring Anna Kendrick. Also a fact: I absolutely love this little musical two-hander and never get tired of it.
I saw the original production back in NYC while it was still relatively unknown and have followed its evolution ever since. When I had the opportunity to review the Lower Ossington Theatre’s version, I naturally jumped at the chance. Toronto’s Groundling Theatre Company presents Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale
For many people, the famous stage direction “Exit, pursued by a bear” is the only thing they know about Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. This is understandable as the tonal dissonance between the play’s first three acts and the last two makes it a difficult play to explore when we’re first learning about Shakespeare in school, but it’s unfortunate because it’s also one of the more interesting of Shakespeare’s plays for that exact same reason.
It’s also a fantastic choice for Groundling Theatre‘s debut piece in their new home at the Coal Mine Theatre.
The 2016 Progress Festival is hosting a microfestival of performances from Forest Fringe. Forest Fringe is an artist-led organization that creates imaginative and unconventional performance events in the UK and internationally, fostering a diverse community of writers, theatre makers, musicians, dancers and live artists. The Forest Fringe Microfestival will hold performances over this weekend, Saturday January 30 and Sunday January 31 , 2016.
This week, the picks are so wildly different that they all touch on different types of relationships: from bullying to murder, friendship to abusive parents, these plays all look at emotional entanglements from different lenses.
