Megan loves being in the thick of all things theatre, but her ultimate goal is to promote theatre to the world of non-theatre people. It was the same when she was the theatre writer for blogTO, or the Fringe Correspondent for CBC Radio One‘s Here and Now, as it is as the founder of Mooney on Theatre. Her basic belief is that there is theatre/performance out there for everyone to love, they just need to find it. This is not to be confused with the idea that everyone should love theatre for theatre’s sake, in fact, as obsessed as she is with theatre, even *she* doesn’t love all types of theatre.

The Demonstrator – Toronto Fringe 2011 Press Release

From Press Release

The Demonstrator
Searching for Transparency

An unfinished story haunts a writer forever. GITA Productions is pleased to announce the world premiere of Grayson R. Moore’s The Demonstrator at the Toronto Fringe Festival. The show opens July 6 at 10:30 pm and closes July 17 at 4:30 pm.

Audrey (Krista Hovsepian), a young journalist, accuses her boss of harassment, but soon issues a mysterious retraction without breathing a word of what happened to anyone.  Isolating herself completely, her only contact with the outside world becomes daily conversations with her paper boy (Stephen Lotimer) and with an enigmatic young girl (Kate Zsoldos) who haunts her every thought, critiquing each and everything that she does. What has her spooked? Why can’t she seem to keep writing? And who exactly is this young girl at Audrey’s side?

32nd Dora Mavor Moore Awards nominees – with links to MoT reviews

So, at this point, if it’s something you’re interested in, you’ll already have seen some kind of article on this year’s Doras.  Maybe the official press release on the TAPA site (TAPA is the organization that coordinates the Doras), or perhaps the announcement from the print media like the Globe, the Star, the Post, the Sun and NOW. If you didn’t see it in any of those, you may have found it in the plethora of online theatre blogs.

Well, here at Mooney on Theatre, we’re also going to post the press release, but, where possible, we will also link to a review of the show, in case you need a refresher on what it was about.  If it is in italics instead of linked, unfortunately Mooney on Theatre was unable to review it.  So, without further ado:

Want to see Toronto Fringe Festival shows for free? Write for us!

Mooney on Theatre is looking for folks to review Toronto Fringe Festival shows, which run from July 6 to 17.

Requirements for the position:

  • Able to attend at least 10 shows during the Fringe Festival (you can spread this through the whole festival, or you can do it in 3 days, it’s up to you how you want to check it out)
  • A strong writer, who can provide comments in a positive/constructive manner – the ability to express what you like and don’t like while acknowledging it is your opinion, and not an absolute
  • Able to work with blog publishing software (either a quick learner, or someone with experience – it’s not very complicated)
  • Ability to work independently and turn information around very quickly
  • Access to a computer to work from (we don’t have an office)

What you DON’T need:

  • To have been published previously
  • Theatre experience or knowledge (I’ve always said my dream writer is someone who hasn’t seen a play since high school)

The positions are unpaid.  Each writer will receive one free ticket to the show they are reviewing .

If you are interested, please forward a writing sample to megan@mooneyontheatre.com by end of day Sunday June 18.  The sample should be between 250 and 400 words, and if possible be in a review format (the last play or movie you saw, or heck, an episode of some tv show).

I look forward to hearing from you, as soon as possible.

Thank you!

For a good time I recommend 2011 Harold Awards, Monday May 2

By Megan Mooney

Monday marks the 18th year of a set of awards for the Toronto theatre community that you likely haven’t heard of, unless you’re a member of the theatre community.  Unlike the Doras, which are filled with glamour and glitz and reported on by major Toronto media, the Harold reception is a more playful, lesser-known affair.

So, now I suppose you may be wondering what the heck the Harolds are, so here’s a little background.
