Circus acts and gravity-defying stunts wow audiences in Opus on stage at the Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto
Canadian Stage welcomed Australian performance troupe Circa to the Bluma Appel Theatre stage for a five-day run to premiere their latest show Opus to North American audiences. Circa is known as one of Australia’s premier circus troupes and that is what can be expected from Opus, written and created by Yaron Lifschitz — gravity-defying stunts, aerial work, trapeze, incredible flexibility, and plenty of death drops.
Accompanying them on stage was Debussy String Quartet. Rather than just providing live music, the string quartet often served as integral components to the circus performance. Along with Debussy, Circa blends circus performance with classical music resulting in a dynamic show that certainly captured the audience’s attention.

Leading cabaret and burlesque troupe Les Coquettes bid a fond farewell to the Toronto stage
For the past 11 years, the lovely ladies and gents of Les Coquettes have wowed and dazzled Toronto audiences with their signature blend of song-and-dance cabaret with tongue-in-cheek burlesque. Their performances taking up residence at Toronto’s Revival Club have sold out year after year and their Halloween and holiday spectacles have become a regular tradition for many.
And now with a bittersweet turn, the fine Coquettes have decided to hang up their garters and stockings with their final show in time for this year’s All Hallow’s Eve. As apropos to the troupe, they’ve decided to go out with a BANG!
With two final nights at the Revival and only four opportunities to see this troupe perform for the last time, be sure to grab your tickets as they’re selling out fast.
The music of Charles Aznavour is brought to the Toronto stage at the Berkeley Street Theatre
Necessary Angel Theatre Company has paired with Canadian Stage to present a musical revue, What Makes a Man, highlighting the works of French-Armenian multilingual singer-songwriter Charles Aznavour, a “showman” still touring the world at the age of 90. He and his work have appeared in multiple films and both CNN and the readers of Time magazine have heralded him as ‘Entertainer of the Century’ beating out both Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley.
Honestly, I’ve never heard of him — don’t know anyone that does either. And if his work has won over global audiences, there’s a big chance I’m missing out on something spectacular. That was all the reason I needed to catch a performance with the hopes I’d be blown away and perhaps become a new fan.
