The Doras serve as Toronto theatre’s night out and a chance for the community to celebrate and honour its own.
Matt Baram and Naomi Snieckus, co-Artistic Directors of The National Theatre of the World, hosted a consistently upbeat, tightly-paced evening and winners kept their acceptance speeches short and to-the-point making this one the shortest Dora Award ceremonies in recent history. Despite there being more categories of awards to present this year the ceremony clocked in at a breezy two-and-a-half hours. Continue reading Announcement: 34th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Award Winners→
Big, honest talent brings theatrical joy to Toronto’s Videofag thanks to Birdtown and Swanville
In a very small white cube of gallery space, I sit as an outsider among friends. It feels like I’ve walked in on somebody else’s cozy gathering of long-time playmates: it’s a reunion of some very funny people and I am now a willing confidante. I receive a warm welcome from Birdtown and Swanville’s Nika Mistruzzi and as the pieces that comprise Friends and Outsidersgo on, I understand more deeply why those in company seem all to be so happy.
A quirky, charming evening at Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre with a fishy double-bill
From a push up challenge between a self-absorbed executive and her devoted secretary to an aging store clerk playing footie with a doctor, the double bill featuring The Way of All Fish and Miss Fozzard Finds Her Feet, did not disappoint. Watching the comedic intriguing actors embody their respective characters was truly a wonderful way to spend a summer evening at the intimate Tarragon Theatre Extra Space.
I’ll be honest. Having read only a short synopsis on the double bill production, I went in with minimal expectation. I let my imagination go wild while I guessed what the intent was behind each play based on their chosen titles. Does the way of the fish have something to do with the analogy ‘there is plenty of fish in the sea?’ Or how exactly is Miss Fozzard going to find her feet? With that being said, going in to the theater with minimal expectation made the experience of watching the plays all the more enjoyable and intriguing.
Magic and Music on display at Luminato in Rafael Benatar’s “Compositions”
Compositions opened last night as part of the final weekend of Luminato. Based on the blurb in the program I had no idea what to expect. Based on the small audience neither did a lot of other people. It’s a shame because Rafael Benatar is delightful. So is his show.
