We’re looking for writers to cover Toronto Theatre

So, we’re looking for writers here at Mooney on Theatre.

All experience levels welcome, and experience with theatre is not necessary (in fact, I’d love to have someone who never goes to the theatre and doesn’t know anything about it – I think that would be a great perspective to have)

If you’re interested or know anyone who might be please email me at megan@mooneyontheatre.com with ‘interested in writing for you’ in the subject line.

Hardsell – Rick Miller at The Canadian Stage Company

By Megan Mooney

Rick Miller Hardsell

Rick Miller and Daniel Brooks are behind what is arguably my favourite theatre piece of all time – Bigger Than Jesus.  So, as you can imagine, I was all a tingle when I saw that there was another collaboration between these two in the Canadian Stage Company 08/09 season – HARDSELL.

So, was my excitement warranted?  Well, to quote Rick Miller, playing Arnie, playing Rick – “It’s not what I expected”.

Jian Gomeshi, Billy Bob Thornton, Albert Schultz and shifting perspectives

By Megan Mooney

Billy Bob Thornton and Jian Gomeshi

So, by now you’ve likely all heard about the SNAFU on Q yesterday with Billy Bob Thornton.

Albert Schultz had to follow Billy Bob, which was both good and bad.  Good because he was the perfect person to provide a bit of comic relief afterwards, providing the knife needed to cut the tension.   Bad because it was hard to focus on his interview because my mind was still reeling from the interview before.  Since I happened to be with someone when I heard it, we kept randomly speaking over Mr. Schultz talking about just how terrible Billy Bob was.

So, before I go on about Billy Bob and Jian, let me point out to you that Albert Schultz is the Soulpepper production Glengarry Glen Ross that is running until May 9, 2009.  If you go on a Tuesday maybe he’ll be at the talkback and you can ask him about the interview.  Oh, and a quick note about the show – it starts at 7:30, so you’ll be disappointed if you show up to go in for 8.

Now, on to Billy Bob and Jian:

What does this all mean?  Well, basically it boils down to this:  Maxwell Mooney Bourke has stolen World Theatre Day.  I will work on having him return it for it’s celebration next week…

0% Down, 100% Screwed

by Dana Lacey

The Second City’s “0% Down, 100% Screwed” opens with a chain gang of ex-Bay Streeters chipping imaginary bricks with imaginary picks. They sing under the watch of a shotgun-slinging guard, blaming their woes on the ultimate scapegoat: The Crisis. Ya know, The Crisis, the recession, the mediocre depression…whatever you want to call that vague and terrifying event the media keeps promising will steal our jobs and homes. It sets the tone for the rest of the evening, which is a mash-up of short scenes about politics, economics and that guy who always asks to see your gas bill (tip: he doesn’t work for your gas company.)
